Judges’ highly commended: Scary Map

by Mislin Wari

As I walk through the room, the place becomes silent, and an overflowing number of eyes turn to me like owls. I wear long pants with a skirt and covered shoes. Because I have a skin disease with scars covering my whole body, I am scared to show myself to people. The scars are scary and creepy.  My scars are a map that are

islands

ridges

deserts

tracks

bays

They show where I've been and haven’t been yet. They even remind me of my home island.

I was the only one in the room who was different, but I'm so grateful to be here.
